Sometimes employers tend to overlook danger signals when hiring "experienced" warehouse workers. In the rush to fill a position, employers think they can "turn someone around" or "our firm is better than X company so we won't have the problems". In a slowing economy, employees can and should be selective.
Time has shown us that one way to weed out unsafe employees is to make sure they are not hired in the first place.
Warehouse Managers should ask their Human Resources Department for the chance to have the Safety Director interview job candidates. The Safety Director could show interviewees the forklifts they will use and follow up with questions such as "how do you feel about wearing a seatbelt?" How potential hires answer can help you weed out the safe workers from the unsafe. Job candidates who don't follow rules as simple as seatbelts will take short cuts in other areas as well.
